Pro Tips to Extending the Life of your Forklift Battery

Not all forklift truck components are made equal. Some deserve more attention than the others when it comes to maintenance. Even when you go through most forklift repair and maintenance tips, you will notice that they place much focus on a short list of the most important ones. Accurate Forklift provides some of the best forklift repair and maintenance services and can also give you advice when needed. When you run an electric forklift, the battery is an important part of every preventative maintenance program. Apart from regularly checking whether it is in the best shape, there is a lot that you can do to make sure that it lasts for a long time. Here are some pro tips to get you going.

Battery Water

The water in your forklift battery evaporates over time due to normal operations. That is why it is important to regularly check its levels every five charges and refill as and when required. Make sure that the water has fewer than 100 parts per million of total dissolved solids as too much will shorten the battery’s life by solidifying on the plates. Keep an eye on underwatering and overwatering as both can damage your battery. Only go up to ¼ above the plates and, depending on the size of your fleet, you can do this by way of specialty water guns, canisters, or single-point watering systems.

Equalizing

Different batteries need to be checked for sulphation and equalized at different intervals according to the user manual.  Equalizing is the process of overcharging your forklift batteries to free the plates of sulphation. Arrange for equalization on a slow day as you will need some time to complete the process. Also, make sure the batteries are back at room temperature before use.

Washing

Another important part of maintaining your forklift batteries is washing them to make sure they are rid of any corrosive buildup. You can do this every six months using water and battery acid neutralizer. Failure to clean your batteries will result in corroded terminals, damaged plastic casing, and cut their lifetime. Always use protective clothing and proper disposal as well as wait for the battery to dry before using it.
